Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium cabbage, chopped
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven – Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Cabbage – Chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces and set aside.
  3. Cook the Beef Mixture – In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and garlic, cooking until softened. Add ground beef, breaking it apart as it browns.
  4. Add Seasonings and Liquids – Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and beef broth. Season with Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Assemble the Bake – Grease a baking dish with butter. Spread half the chopped cabbage in the bottom of the dish. Layer with half of the beef mixture, then repeat with the remaining cabbage and beef.
  6. Bake – Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle cheddar and parmesan cheese on top, and bake for an additional 10 minutes until melted and bubbly.
  7. Serve – Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Low-Carb Version – Replace diced tomatoes with crushed tomatoes for fewer carbs.
  • Spicy Kick – Add jalapeños or extra red pepper flakes.
  • Cheese Variations – Try mozzarella or pepper jack for a different flavor profile.
  • Vegetable Boost – Add bell peppers, carrots, or mushrooms for extra nutrients.
  • Ground Meat Options – Swap beef for turkey, chicken, or pork for a leaner or different taste.
