Classic Tuna Noodle Casserole

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Description

This Classic Tuna Noodle Casserole is a creamy, cheesy, and crispy-topped comfort food favorite. Easy to make, budget-friendly, and perfect for weeknight dinners or potlucks.

Ingredients

  • Egg noodles
  • Canned tuna
  • Condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • Milk
  • Frozen peas
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Butter
  • Bread crumbs or crushed potato chips
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Paprika (optional)
  • Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the noodles according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. Prepare the sauce – In a large bowl, mix the condensed cream of mushroom soup with milk until well combined.
  4. Sauté the aromatics – In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and cook the diced onion and minced garlic until soft and fragrant.
  5. Combine ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked noodles, drained tuna, sautéed onion and garlic, frozen peas, shredded cheddar cheese, and soup mixture. Stir well to coat everything evenly. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika if using.
  6. Transfer to baking dish – Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  7. Add the topping – Sprinkle breadcrumbs or crushed potato chips over the top. For extra flavor, mix the breadcrumbs with melted butter before spreading.
  8. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the top is golden brown.
  9. Cool slightly and serve – Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.

Notes

  • Use Different Soups – Swap the cream of mushroom soup for cream of celery or cream of chicken for a different flavor.
  • Add Vegetables – Stir in mushrooms, bell peppers, or chopped carrots for extra texture and nutrition.
  • Make it Spicier – Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot sauce for some heat.
  • Cheesy Upgrade – Mix in more shredded cheese, like Monterey Jack or Gouda, for an extra creamy dish.
  • Healthier Option – Use whole wheat noodles and reduced-fat soup to lighten up the dish.
