Description

  • Creamy Chicken Mushroom Stroganoff is a rich and comforting dish made with tender chicken, sautéed mushrooms, and a velvety cream sauce. Perfect for a cozy family dinner, this easy-to-make recipe pairs well with pasta, rice, or mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 8 oz white or cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley (for garnish)
  • Egg noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Season chicken with salt and pepper.
  2. Sauté the Chicken: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook chicken until golden brown on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the Mushrooms and Aromatics: Melt butter in the same pan. Add mushrooms and sauté until browned and tender. Stir in garlic and onion, cooking until fragrant.
  4. Make the Sauce Base: Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms, stirring well to coat. Cook for about a minute.
  5. Deglaze the Pan: Pour in chicken broth, stirring continuously to create a smooth sauce.
  6. Add Flavor Boosters: Stir in Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for a couple of minutes.
  7. Incorporate Dairy: Lower the heat and stir in sour cream and heavy cream until smooth.
  8. Return the Chicken: Add the cooked chicken back to the pan, coating it in the sauce. Simmer until heated through.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve hot over egg noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • Make It Lighter: Use half-and-half or Greek yogurt instead of heavy cream.
  • Add Vegetables: Incorporate spinach, bell peppers, or peas.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free flour or cornstarch.
  • Spice It Up: Add red pepper flakes or paprika.
  • Swap the Protein: Substitute chicken with turkey, shrimp, or tofu.
