Ingredients

Scale
  • 300g beef (sirloin or flank steak), thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, minced
  • 1 red chili, finely chopped
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 tbsp sweet chili sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp vinegar (rice or white vinegar)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 spring onions, sliced
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: Slice the beef into thin strips against the grain. In a bowl, mix the beef with soy sauce, white pepper, and egg white. Let it marinate for 15 minutes.
  2. Coat the Beef: Toss the marinated beef in cornstarch until evenly coated.
  3. Fry the Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the beef strips in batches until golden and crispy. Drain on a paper towel.
  4. Prepare the Sauce: Heat sesame oil in a separate pan. Sauté garlic, ginger, and red chili until fragrant.
  5. Add Vegetables: Stir in red bell pepper and cook for a couple of minutes.
  6. Combine Sauces: Add sweet chili sauce, tomato ketchup, dark soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar. Stir well and let it simmer briefly.
  7. Toss in the Beef: Add the crispy beef to the sauce and toss quickly to coat evenly.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with sliced spring onions and serve hot with rice or noodles.

Notes

  • Spicier Version: Add more red chilies or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use tamari instead of soy sauce.
  • Vegetarian Option: Substitute beef with crispy tofu or jackfruit.
  • Less Sweet: Reduce the sugar and sweet chili sauce.
