Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Red food coloring (a few drops)
  • Oil for frying

For Coating:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

For Cream Cheese Dipping Sauce:

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a saucepan, heat milk, butter, sugar, and red food coloring over medium heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is well combined.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Slowly add the dry mixture into the saucepan, stirring continuously until a smooth dough forms. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Pipe the Churros: Transfer the dough into a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped nozzle. Pipe strips of dough onto a lined baking sheet.
  5. Fry the Churros: Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry churros in batches for 3-4 minutes until crispy and deep red.
  6. Coat with Sugar: Drain fried churros on a paper towel, then roll in cinnamon-sugar mixture while still warm.
  7. Make the Cream Cheese Dipping Sauce: Beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream until smooth.
  8. Serve and Enjoy: Serve churros warm with the dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Chocolate Drizzle: Replace the dipping sauce with melted dark or white chocolate.
  • Spiced Sugar Coating: Add nutmeg or pumpkin spice to the cinnamon-sugar mix.
  • Baked Churros: Pipe onto a baking sheet and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.
