Description
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- ¼ cup honey
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm water and honey. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine oats, all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, and salt.
- Combine wet and dry: Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg to the dry ingredients. Stir until a rough dough forms.
- Knead the dough: Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled.
- Shape the loaf: Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan.
- Second rise: Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Cool and serve: Remove from pan, cool on a wire rack, then slice and enjoy.
Notes
- Texture: For a softer loaf, add an extra tablespoon of honey.
- Gluten-free option: Use a gluten-free flour blend, though texture may vary.
- Vegan alternative: Replace egg with a flaxseed egg and use plant-based butter.
- Add-ins: Mix in nuts, seeds, or dried fruit for extra flavor and texture.
- Storage: Keep at room temperature for 3 days, refrigerate for up to a week, or freeze for up to 3 months.
