Description

Enjoy this Quick and Easy Drop Biscuits and Sausage Gravy recipe—fluffy drop biscuits topped with rich, creamy sausage gravy. A simple, comforting Southern classic perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Drop Biscuits:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold, cut into small pieces)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk

For the Sausage Gravy:

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (or ground pork)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Drop Biscuits

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Stir to mix evenly.
  3. Add cold butter pieces and cut them into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter pieces.
  4. Pour in the milk and gently stir until the dough is just combined (it should be slightly lumpy).
  5. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them 1-2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Sausage Gravy

  1. In a large skillet, heat over medium heat. Add sausage and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  2. Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage and stir for 1-2 minutes to cook the flour.
  3. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens. If too thick, add more milk to achieve desired consistency.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Simmer for 3-4 minutes and adjust seasonings.

Step 3: Assemble the Dish

  1. Split the biscuits and place them on serving plates.
  2. Spoon the sausage gravy generously over the biscuits.
  3. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Vegetarian Option: Use plant-based sausage or crumbled tofu in place of breakfast sausage.
  • Cheese Biscuits: Add shredded cheddar cheese to the biscuit dough for a cheesy variation.
  • Spicy Gravy: Add hot sauce or more red pepper flakes to spice up the gravy.

  • Low-Fat Version: Use low-fat milk and replace butter with olive oil in the biscuits.
