Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 tbsp fresh or 1 tsp dried herbs (parsley, thyme, or oregano)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 egg + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, mix warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy. Add flour, salt, melted butter, and egg, then mix until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the Dough: Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the Cheese Filling: Mix shredded cheese with garlic powder and herbs in a bowl. Set aside.
  4. Shape the Buns: Punch down risen dough, divide into 8–12 portions, flatten each into a disc, place a spoonful of cheese mixture in the center, then seal the edges to form a bun.
  5. Second Rise: Arrange buns on a lined baking tray, cover with a towel, and let rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Apply Egg Wash: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush buns with egg wash.
  7. Bake the Buns: Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  8. Cool and Serve: Let cool slightly before serving warm.

  • Spicy: Add diced jalapeños or red pepper flakes to the filling.
  • Garlic Butter Glaze: Brush buns with melted garlic butter after baking.
  • Cheese Variations: Try Gruyère, Parmesan, or cream cheese.
