Ingredients
Scale
For the Drop Biscuits:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
For the Sausage Gravy:
- 1 lb ground breakfast sausage
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional)
Instructions
For the Drop Biscuits:
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Stir to distribute evenly.
- Add the cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the buttermilk gently with a spoon until just combined (do not overmix).
- Drop spoonfuls of the biscuit dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spaced about 1 inch apart for soft biscuits.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool slightly.
For the Sausage Gravy:
- In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, breaking it into small crumbles. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess grease if needed.
- Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Gradually pour in the milk while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until it thickens.
- Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes or garlic powder to taste. Adjust seasonings as needed.
- Once thickened, remove from heat. Spoon the gravy over the warm drop biscuits and serve immediately.
Notes
- Vegetarian Sausage Gravy: Substitute plant-based sausage or mushrooms for a meat-free option.
- Spicy Sausage Gravy: Add extra red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños for a spicy kick.
- Cheese Biscuits: Incorporate shredded cheese into the biscuit dough for a cheesy twist.
- Herbed Biscuits: Add rosemary, thyme, or parsley to the biscuit dough for an herby flavor.
