Swiss/German Sausage Salad

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 2-4 servings 1x

Description

Enjoy a classic Swiss/German Sausage Salad (Wurstsalat) with sliced sausage, onions, pickles, and a tangy vinaigrette. A quick, flavorful dish perfect for lunch or as a side.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 250g sausage (Lyoner, Cervelat, or Fleischwurst)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 23 pickles, chopped
  • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp fresh chives or parsley, chopped
  • 50g Swiss cheese (optional), cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Slice the sausage into thin rounds or strips. Thinly slice the onion and chop the pickles.
  2. Make the Dressing: In a bowl, whisk together the white wine vinegar, vegetable oil, mustard, salt, black pepper, and sugar until well combined.
  3. Assemble the Salad: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced sausage, onions, and pickles. Pour the dressing over and toss to coat evenly.
  4. Chill: Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with chopped chives or parsley before serving. If using Swiss cheese, add thin slices or cubes for extra flavor.
  6. Enjoy: Serve cold with fresh bread, pretzels, or a crisp green salad.

Notes

  • Cheese Addition: Mix in Swiss cheese or Emmental for a creamy contrast.
  • Spicy Kick: Add finely chopped chili peppers or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Vegan Option: Use plant-based sausage and a vegan-friendly mustard.
  • Herb Infusion: Try fresh dill or tarragon for added aroma.
  • Different Sausages: Experiment with smoked sausage, bratwurst, or bologna.
