Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 teaspoons dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ½ cup plain yogurt
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 garlic cloves, minced (optional)
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center.
- Pour warm water into the well, add sugar, then sprinkle yeast over the water. Stir gently and let sit for 5 minutes until bubbles form.
- Add plain yogurt to the mixture. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for 2-3 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball, cover with plastic wrap, and let them rest for 30 minutes.
- Roll each dough ball into an oval about ¼ inch thick.
- Optional: In a small bowl, mix melted butter with minced garlic, chopped parsley, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
- Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
- Place a rolled dough piece onto the hot skillet. Cook until bubbles form on the surface, then flip and cook the other side until golden brown.
- Once cooked, brush the naan with the optional garlic butter mixture. Repeat with remaining dough pieces.
Notes
- For plain naan, omit the garlic, parsley, and red pepper flakes. Simply brush with melted butter after cooking.
- Naan can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven before serving.
