  • Total Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: 8 naan breads 1x

Description

Discover the best homemade naan bread recipe that’s soft, fluffy, and perfect for pairing with your favorite curries. This easy-to-follow guide ensures restaurant-quality naan right from your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ cup plain yogurt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center.
  • Pour warm water into the well, add sugar, then sprinkle yeast over the water. Stir gently and let sit for 5 minutes until bubbles form.
  • Add plain yogurt to the mixture. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for 2-3 minutes until smooth.
  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Once risen, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball, cover with plastic wrap, and let them rest for 30 minutes.
  • Roll each dough ball into an oval about ¼ inch thick.
  • Optional: In a small bowl, mix melted butter with minced garlic, chopped parsley, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
  • Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Place a rolled dough piece onto the hot skillet. Cook until bubbles form on the surface, then flip and cook the other side until golden brown.
  • Once cooked, brush the naan with the optional garlic butter mixture. Repeat with remaining dough pieces.

Notes

  • For plain naan, omit the garlic, parsley, and red pepper flakes. Simply brush with melted butter after cooking.
  • Naan can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven before serving.
