Description
This homemade vanilla sauce is a rich, creamy, and aromatic topping perfect for desserts like bread pudding, waffles, pancakes, and fresh fruit. Made with simple ingredients, this easy-to-make sauce delivers a luscious flavor that surpasses store-bought versions.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 tsp vanilla extract or 1 vanilla bean (scraped)
- 1 tsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Heat the Dairy – In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk and heavy cream. Stir occasionally and heat until warm but not boiling.
- Prepare the Egg Mixture – In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, egg yolks, and a pinch of salt until pale and slightly thickened.
- Temper the Eggs – Gradually whisk a small amount of the warm milk mixture into the egg mixture to prevent scrambling.
- Combine and Cook – Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
- Add Vanilla – Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract or vanilla bean seeds.
- Strain for Smoothness – For a silkier texture, strain the sauce through a fine-mesh sieve.
- Cool and Serve – Let cool slightly before serving. It will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm or chilled.
Notes
- Dairy-Free Option: Substitute milk and cream with coconut milk or almond milk.
- Boozy Twist: Add a splash of rum, bourbon, or brandy.
- Spiced Version: Mix in cinnamon or nutmeg for added warmth.
- Lighter Option: Use only milk instead of heavy cream for a thinner sauce.
